Statistics 

  • From 2010:

    • Global primary production of plastic was 270 million tons 

    • Global plastic waste was 275 million tons (exceeds GPP due to previous years)

    • 31.9 million tons of plastic were mismanaged 

    • 8 million tons of plastic waste entered the ocean

    • Annual plastic waste per person is greatest in countries such as Germany (0.48 kg), Ireland (0.43 kg), Netherlands (0.42 kg ), and the United States (0.34 kg)

    • Annual plastic waste is greatest in China (59.08 million tons), the United States (37.83 million tons), and Germany (14.48 million tons)

    • 27.7% of global mismanaged waste came from China and 10.1% came from Indonesia 

  • In 1950, 2 million tons of plastic were produced per year. In 2015, 381 million tons were produced.

  • In 2015, 55% of plastic waste was discarded, 25% was incinerated, and 20% was recycled 

  • In 2013, out of the 268,950 tons of plastic waste known to be in the oceans, 96,400 tons of plastic were in the North Pacific Ocean
